When is Women’s Day?

In 2026, Women’s Day falls on Sunday, March 8, 2026. It is classified here as a Belarusian public holiday.

History of Women’s Day

International Women’s Day in Belarus combines the global history of women’s rights and labour activism with a deeply familiar social custom: expressing appreciation to women in families, workplaces and schools. March 8 became a public holiday across much of the former Soviet space, and Belarus has retained it as a nationwide day off.

The holiday’s tone is often personal rather than political. Flowers—especially tulips and mimosa—are given to mothers, partners, colleagues and teachers; restaurants and cultural venues are busy around the date. At the same time, the day offers an opening for discussions of equality, work and the lives of women whose contributions are often treated as ordinary but indispensable.

Its roots lie in international socialist women’s organising and demands for political and labour rights, but decades of Soviet and post-Soviet practice also shaped a strongly domestic holiday. Both strands are part of an accurate account. The decree calls it Women’s Day and declares March 8 non-working. If the fixed date falls on a weekend, there is no automatic replacement; annual government decisions may instead rearrange a nearby weekday and Saturday.

How Women’s Day is observed

The statutory holiday remains March 8 itself; any bridge day or working Saturday must come from that year’s transfer schedule, while an immediately preceding workday is one hour shorter.
