When is International Women’s Day?
In 2026, International Women’s Day falls on Sunday, March 8, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.
History of International Women’s Day
International Women’s Day developed through early twentieth-century labour and women’s movements and is observed globally on March 8. Angola lists it as a national holiday, distinct from Angolan Women’s Day on March 2, which is a national commemorative date but not a holiday under Law 11/18. The two dates should not be merged.
Public discussion may address women’s participation in the liberation struggle, paid and unpaid work, education, health, political representation and persistent gender-based inequality. Celebratory messages, flowers or gifts are common in some settings, but they should not replace the day’s rights-based history or imply that women form one socially uniform group.
Law 12/23 normally gives employees the right not to work on a national holiday without losing ordinary pay. Continuous operations and situations permitting overtime can remain active under the Labour Law, so health care, transport, security and other rostered services do not necessarily close. Law 11/18 also creates a compensated ‘bridge’ whenever a national holiday falls on Tuesday or Thursday: work is suspended on the preceding Monday or following Friday, and the preceding week’s daily schedule is lengthened by ninety minutes. It does not generally move Sunday holidays to Monday.

Traditions of International Women’s Day
Family and community
Families, friends or colleagues may acknowledge women with messages and gatherings while rights organisations centre substantive equality concerns. Practices vary across provinces, languages, churches, generations and individual households.
Public life
Public institutions and civil-society groups may hold debates, recognition events, health initiatives or campaigns against discrimination and violence. The scale and form of official or community events are announced locally and change by year.
Work and travel
Do not confuse March 8 with March 2, and do not expect an automatic Monday substitute in 2026. Continuous operations and shift workers can follow separate arrangements under the General Labour Law.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Angola official holiday calendar or legislation. Government, regional, school and employer schedules in Angola may differ; check the linked official source and current local notices before making time-sensitive plans.
