When is Whit Monday?

In 2026, Whit Monday falls on Monday, May 25, 2026. It is classified here as a Belgian public holiday.

History of Whit Monday

Whit Monday follows Pentecost Sunday, the Christian feast marking the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles. Pentecost is the fiftieth day of the Easter season, and Belgium’s statutory Monday is calculated 50 days after Easter Sunday. Its position among the ten federal employment holidays preserves a shared movable break even as religious attendance has declined.

Church observance focuses on the Pentecost liturgy, sometimes including confirmation, special music or multilingual worship. The civil holiday has a broader seasonal role. It falls in May or June, when households use a three-day weekend for garden meals, cycling, festivals and short travel within Belgium or across its nearby borders with France, Luxembourg, Germany and the Netherlands.

Private-sector employees may not generally be required to work, except where holiday work is allowed under Sunday-work exceptions. Those who work are entitled to compensatory rest and public-holiday pay. Although Monday is a normal activity day for many undertakings, Belgian law still requires a substitute if it is an ordinary inactivity day for the applicable full-time schedule.

How Whit Monday is observed

Whit Monday is a statutory private-sector public holiday, with workplace-specific substitution possible when Monday is ordinarily inactive for the relevant schedule.

Traditions of Whit Monday

  • Pentecost liturgy

Church communities celebrate the Holy Spirit with readings, choir music and, in some parishes, baptisms or confirmation-related gatherings.

  • Three-day excursions

Families plan coastal, Ardennes or cross-border weekend trips that take advantage of Belgium’s compact geography and easily reached neighbouring countries.

  • Outdoor community programmes

Local organisers schedule public fairs, walks, sports and cultural events during the mild late-spring weekend when weather permits.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Belgian federal public-holiday guidance. Community and regional dates do not automatically apply throughout Belgium; local and employer schedules may differ.
