When is Ascension Day?
In 2026, Ascension Day falls on Thursday, May 14, 2026. It is classified here as a Belgian public holiday.
History of Ascension Day
Ascension commemorates the Christian belief that Jesus ascended to heaven forty days after the resurrection. Counting Easter Sunday as the first day places the feast 39 days after it, always on a Thursday. Belgium retains Ascension among its ten statutory public holidays, reflecting the lasting influence of the Western Christian calendar on the country’s federal employment calendar.
Catholic parishes celebrate Mass and some communities preserve processional or musical customs. For many Belgians, however, the date is most visible as a late-spring day away from work and school. A Friday closure can create a four-day weekend, but that bridge day is produced by school calendars, annual leave or an employer decision; it is not an additional national public holiday.
The statutory holiday generally prohibits private-sector work except under the same derogations that permit Sunday employment. Qualifying staff who work receive compensatory rest. Ascension’s Thursday position usually avoids the substitute-day issue, though a Thursday can be a normal inactivity day in a particular full-time work regime; federal rules then determine a replacement within that undertaking.
How Ascension Day is observed
Ascension Thursday is a statutory private-sector public holiday; Friday is only a bridge day when a school, employer or leave arrangement provides it.
Traditions of Ascension Day
Ascension worship
Catholic parishes hold Mass with readings and music centred on Christ’s departure, the apostles and the promise of Pentecost.
Bridge-weekend travel
Families may take Friday leave and use four days for Ardennes stays, coastal visits or short journeys into neighbouring countries.
Late-spring community events
Markets, fairs, cycling events and local festivals often use the Thursday holiday or surrounding weekend to attract visitors.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Belgian federal public-holiday guidance. Community and regional dates do not automatically apply throughout Belgium; local and employer schedules may differ.
