When is Independence Day?

In 2026, Independence Day falls on Tuesday, September 22, 2026. It is classified here as a Bulgarian public holiday.

History of Independence Day

Independence Day of Bulgaria is the precise English identity of this Bulgarian holiday. On September 22, 1908, Prince Ferdinand read the independence manifesto at the Church of the Forty Martyrs in Veliko Tarnovo. Bulgaria rejected the tributary status left by the Berlin Treaty, became a kingdom, and Ferdinand adopted the title Tsar; international recognition followed in 1909. The date belongs to Bulgaria’s own civic, religious or cultural chronology, and understanding that subject is more useful than treating it as an interchangeable day away from work.

Article 154(1) of Bulgaria’s Labour Code lists this as a nationwide public holiday. Under Article 154(2), effective since 2017, a listed holiday other than the Easter period that falls on Saturday or Sunday produces the first following working day—or the first two when both weekend days are holidays—as non-working time. This predictable rule replaced reliance on routine annual calendar reshuffling and compensating working Saturdays; the Council of Ministers retains only a separate power to proclaim exceptional non-working days for events of special significance.

The anniversary is distinct from Liberation Day’s 1878 restoration of autonomous statehood and from the 1885 unification with Eastern Rumelia. Those three dates describe successive constitutional and diplomatic stages. Veliko Tarnovo leads the national programme with church, military and civic ceremonies, while flags, concerts and exhibitions appear across Bulgaria. Essential, continuous and scheduled services can still operate, while museums, shops and transport providers publish their own holiday hours. Readers should therefore separate the legal status of the date from the particular ceremonies, worship or household customs through which Bulgarians experience it.

How Independence Day is observed

Independence Day is a nationwide public holiday; a Saturday or Sunday occurrence generates a following non-working weekday under Labour Code Article 154(2).

Traditions of Independence Day

  • Veliko Tarnovo commemoration

Ceremonies explicitly connect the Forty Martyrs Church, Tsarevets and the old capital’s medieval symbolism with Ferdinand’s 1908 manifesto.

  • Military tattoo

A formal evening programme of military music, guards and fireworks often gives the independence anniversary a distinctive ceremonial close.

  • Constitutional history

Museums and schools explain tributary principality, kingdom and international recognition so the 1908 act is not confused with 1878 liberation.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Bulgarian government and parliamentary guidance. Education-sector observances and private-employer schedules can differ from the statutory public-holiday calendar.
