When is Rwagasore Day?
In 2026, Rwagasore Day falls on Tuesday, October 13, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.
History of Rwagasore Day
October 13 commemorates the assassination in 1961 of Prince Louis Rwagasore, a son of Mwami Mwambutsa IV and the leading figure in the Union for National Progress, UPRONA. His party won the September 1961 legislative election, and he became prime minister as Burundi approached independence. He was shot at a restaurant near Bujumbura only weeks later.
Rwagasore advocated immediate independence, economic self-reliance and political organisation across social divisions. His killing involved Burundian political rivals and a Greek gunman, while historical debate has also examined the responsibility and conduct of Belgian colonial officials. Because the case belongs to a contested decolonisation history, it is better explained through documented events than through a simple story of unanimous national politics.
Burundi officially designates Rwagasore a Hero of Independence. Annual programmes commonly include wreath-laying at his mausoleum in Vugizo, a requiem Mass and speeches about independence and unity. The date remembers his death rather than the July 1 transfer of sovereignty, so it remains distinct from Independence Day. October 13 is a paid, non-working holiday; participation in the commemorative programme is voluntary.
