When is Easter Monday?

In 2026, Easter Monday falls on Monday, April 6, 2026. It is classified here as a regional public holiday.

History of Easter Monday

Easter Monday belongs to the long Christian tradition of extending Easter beyond a single Sunday. In parts of Europe the day developed as a second holiday for worship, visiting and outdoor activity, and those practices travelled to Canada with French and British settlers. The date changes each year and always falls on the Monday immediately after Easter Sunday.

In modern Canada, Easter Monday has an unusual status. It is a designated paid holiday for much of the federal public service and appears on federal government closure calendars, yet it is not one of the ten general holidays guaranteed to every federally regulated employee under the Canada Labour Code. Provincial employment standards also differ, so many private-sector employees work as usual.

That distinction makes Easter Monday a useful example of why Canadian holiday calendars need scope labels. A federal office may be closed while nearby shops and private workplaces remain open. Schools may also be closed because of their spring calendar rather than because the day is a province-wide statutory holiday.

How Easter Monday is observed

Many federal public-service offices close, but Easter Monday is not a universal statutory holiday for all Canadian workers. Provincial, school and private-employer schedules vary.

Traditions of Easter Monday

  • An extended family weekend

Many households treat Monday as the final day of Easter visits and meals. Whether people have the day off depends on their employer, province and school calendar.

  • Egg hunts and children’s activities

Community egg hunts and family activities sometimes continue into Monday, especially when weekend weather causes a postponement or relatives are travelling between households.

  • Religious observance

Some churches hold services or devotional events during the Easter octave. The tone is generally celebratory, in contrast with the solemn character of Good Friday.

  • Return travel

For people with the day off, Easter Monday often becomes a travel day after a family visit or short spring break. Transport and attraction hours should be checked locally.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Government of Canada holiday guidance. Provincial, territorial, school and private-employer schedules may differ.
