When is Victoria Day?
In 2026, Victoria Day falls on Monday, May 18, 2026. It is classified here as a federal general holiday.
History of Victoria Day
The birthday of Queen Victoria was celebrated in Canada during her reign, and the legislature of the Province of Canada declared May 24 a holiday in 1845. After Confederation, the date remained a popular expression of loyalty to the Crown. When Victoria died in 1901, Parliament established a legal holiday called Victoria Day, giving a familiar public custom a permanent name.
The date did not always follow today’s rule. In 1952, the Holidays Act fixed Victoria Day on the Monday preceding May 25, creating a predictable long weekend. The holiday also became the official Canadian celebration of the reigning Sovereign’s birthday. A 2023 proclamation confirmed that the tradition would continue during the reign of King Charles III and for future sovereigns.
Victoria Day is now both constitutional ceremony and seasonal milestone. Federal buildings may fly the Royal Union Flag where arrangements allow, while many Canadians think of the weekend as the unofficial beginning of summer. Its statutory status varies across provinces, and Quebec observes National Patriots’ Day on the same Monday, commemorating a different history.

Traditions of Victoria Day
Fireworks displays
Municipal and community fireworks are a familiar Victoria Day tradition. Rules, schedules and fire restrictions vary, particularly when dry spring weather increases wildfire risk.
Opening the summer season
Many Canadians open cottages, prepare gardens or begin camping season over the long weekend. The custom is informal but gives the holiday a strong seasonal identity.
Royal and military ceremony
Flag protocol, gun salutes and official statements connect Victoria Day with the Crown and the Canadian Armed Forces. Ceremonies are most visible in capitals and military communities.
National Patriots’ Day in Quebec
Quebec marks the same Monday by remembering the Patriotes of 1837–38 and their struggle for democratic government. Its ceremonies and historical programs differ from Victoria Day observance elsewhere.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Government of Canada holiday guidance. Provincial, territorial, school and private-employer schedules may differ.
