When is Assumption Day?

In 2026, Assumption Day falls on Saturday, August 15, 2026. It is a Chilean national public holiday. Government offices, schools and many businesses close, subject to essential-service and employer arrangements.

History of Assumption Day

Assumption Day marks the Catholic belief that Mary was taken into heaven at the end of her earthly life. It is celebrated in many countries with Catholic traditions, including Chile.

Parishes may hold Masses, novenas, processions and family gatherings. In many places the day is less public than the July devotion to the Virgen del Carmen, but it remains important to worshippers.

August 15 is a legal holiday in Chile. When it falls at a weekend, there is not an automatic universal substitute day, so annual calendars and local schedules matter.

Local Marian titles and patronal celebrations can give August 15 a stronger identity in particular parishes than it has nationally. Liturgical teaching distinguishes the Assumption from the Immaculate Conception on December 8: the August feast concerns the end of Mary’s earthly life, whereas December’s feast concerns her own conception. Clear content avoids confusing these two Chilean public holidays.

How Assumption Day is observed

Assumption Day is a national public holiday. Catholic Masses, Marian processions, novenas and family observance vary according to parish and locality.

Traditions of Assumption Day

  • Mass for the Assumption

Catholic communities celebrate Mary’s entry into heavenly glory through scripture, prayer and Eucharistic worship according to local timetables.

  • Parish processions

Some congregations carry a Marian image through nearby streets after novenas or Mass, with routes and participation organised by local devotees.

  • Distinguishing Marian feasts

Religious education explains that August’s Assumption differs from December’s Immaculate Conception, preventing two important Chilean holidays from being conflated.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Chile national holiday law and official calendar. Chile has specific legal transfer rules for selected religious and October holidays; the official annual calendar, employer schedules and local events should be checked.
