When is Christmas Day?

In 2026, Christmas Day falls on Friday, December 25, 2026. It is a Chilean national public holiday. Government offices, schools and many businesses close, subject to essential-service and employer arrangements.

History of Christmas Day

Christmas in Chile takes place in the Southern Hemisphere summer. Nochebuena, Christmas Eve, is often the main family gathering, with a late meal, gifts and a midnight welcome to Navidad.

For Christians the date remains a celebration of the birth of Jesus. For many others it is also an intergenerational reunion shaped by food, music, travel and the beginning of the summer holiday period.

December 25 is a legal national holiday and an irrenunciable holiday for most commerce workers under Chilean labour rules. Its warm-weather setting gives Chilean Christmas a character different from northern-winter imagery, while religious and family traditions remain familiar.

Children may wait for the Viejito Pascuero, Chile’s name for Santa Claus, and gifts are often opened late on Christmas Eve rather than the following morning. Pan de Pascua and cola de mono are familiar seasonal foods and drinks, though neither is universal. Christmas Day itself is typically quieter, with rest, leftovers and visits after Nochebuena.

How Christmas Day is observed

Christmas Day is a national public holiday. Worship, family meals, gifts and summer gatherings are common, and most commerce workers receive protected rest.

Traditions of Christmas Day

  • Nochebuena in summer

Families gather for a late Christmas Eve meal in warm weather, often opening gifts around midnight before a quieter December 25.

  • Viejito Pascuero

Children commonly know Santa Claus as Viejito Pascuero, whose arrival is incorporated into household gift traditions rather than one public ceremony.

  • Pan de Pascua and cola de mono

Spiced fruit-and-nut cake and a chilled coffee-based drink are familiar seasonal flavours, with recipes varying between homes and bakeries.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Chile national holiday law and official calendar. Chile has specific legal transfer rules for selected religious and October holidays; the official annual calendar, employer schedules and local events should be checked.
