When is Cartagena Independence?

In 2026, Cartagena Independence falls on Monday, November 16, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.

History of Cartagena Independence

On November 11, 1811, Cartagena de Indias declared absolute independence from Spain and created a free and sovereign state. The episode went beyond an elite document. Cartagena’s official historical account emphasises the mobilisation from Getsemaní, where artisans and members of the pardo militias, including figures associated with Pedro Romero and the Lanceros de Getsemaní, pressed the governing junta to make a complete break with royal authority.

The declaration made Cartagena an early centre of republican revolution, but independence was not secure. Spanish forces under Pablo Morillo besieged the city in 1815, causing severe hunger and loss of life before royalist occupation. That experience contributed to Cartagena’s title La Heroica. The anniversary therefore carries memories of popular political participation, Caribbean identity, celebration and the costly resistance that followed the declaration.

Law 51 of 1983 makes November 11 a nationwide paid holiday and transfers rest to the following Monday when necessary. In Cartagena, the local Fiestas de Independencia extend beyond the labour date with flags, floral offerings, neighbourhood participation, music, dance, comparsas and a major parade. Elsewhere in Colombia, the Monday may be quieter, but its national status acknowledges Cartagena’s role in the wider independence process.

How Cartagena Independence is observed

Paid rest falls on the Monday on or after November 11; Cartagena itself holds a wider civic and cultural season with ceremonies, neighbourhood events, music and parades.
