When is Independence Day?
In 2026, Independence Day falls on Monday, July 20, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.
History of Independence Day
Colombia’s Independence Day marks July 20, 1810, when political leaders in Santafé formed a governing junta during the crisis of the Spanish monarchy. The event is popularly linked with the episode of the flower vase, but the Archivo General de la Nación places it in a broader movement of organised creole opposition and local juntas. It was a turning point, not the instant completion of independence.
Conflict and political experimentation continued after 1810. Provinces pursued different paths, royalist forces recovered territory and the liberation campaign culminated in decisive victories years later, including Boyacá in 1819. Recognising that longer process makes July 20 more meaningful: the day commemorates the opening of a revolutionary political phase while August 7 remembers the military campaign that secured control of Santafé.
Law 51 of 1983 grants nationwide paid rest on July 20 and keeps it on the fixed anniversary. State institutions organise ceremonies, military and civic programmes, museums and archives share historical materials, and the Colombian flag is prominent. Celebrations can express pride while also inviting reflection on whose voices appeared in independence narratives and how citizenship developed after colonial rule.
