When is Boxing Day?

In 2026, Boxing Day falls on Monday, December 28, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.

History of Boxing Day

Boxing Day is the statutory public holiday immediately following Christmas Day. The name came through British and New Zealand administrative and cultural connections, but contemporary Cook Islands observance is generally an extension of the local Christmas season rather than a uniform historical ritual. It gives households another day for rest, visiting, recreation and practical travel between family commitments.

Activities vary widely. Some families continue shared meals or church-linked gatherings, while others spend time outdoors, attend sport or return to work in hospitality and transport. The holiday should not be described as closing every business: the visitor economy, health care, policing, utilities and other essential functions may operate, often with reduced hours or rostered staff.

The law treats Boxing Day separately from Christmas Day. If either date falls on a weekend, the public-service policy assigns the following Monday and, where required, Tuesday, preserving both holidays without overlap. In 2026 Boxing Day falls on Saturday, 26 December and is observed on Monday, 28 December. Employee entitlement turns on the observed date and the worker’s normal schedule.

How Boxing Day is observed

Boxing Day falls on Saturday, 26 December 2026 and is observed on Monday, 28 December under the Cook Islands weekend-transfer policy.

Traditions of Boxing Day

  • Rest and visiting

The second Christmas holiday offers time for relaxed family visits, shared leftovers and recovery after Christmas Day commitments.

  • Sport and outdoors

Families may choose beaches, sport or other outdoor recreation, depending on local weather, transport availability and community plans.

  • Substitute-day sequence

Weekend Christmas and Boxing Day holidays move to Monday and Tuesday where necessary so their statutory entitlements remain distinct.
