When is Independence Day?

In 2026, Independence Day falls on Thursday, June 25, 2026. It is an observance rather than a federal holiday, so federal offices and most businesses follow their normal schedules.

History of Independence Day

Croatia’s Independence Day, Dan neovisnosti, is observed on June 25 because Parliament adopted the Constitutional Decision on Sovereignty and Independence on that date in 1991, following the May independence referendum. Implementation was then suspended for three months under the Brioni Declaration. On October 8, after the moratorium and the October 7 attack on Banski dvori, Parliament terminated the remaining state-legal ties with Yugoslavia. These are related but distinct milestones, which explains Croatia’s historically changing holiday names and dates.

Under the law effective in 2020, June 25 is a spomendan—a national memorial day—but remains an ordinary working day. It replaced the earlier arrangement in which June 25 had been Statehood Day and October 8 was the non-working Independence Day. Parliament, government, schools or cultural institutions may publish statements, exhibitions and educational programmes, and flags may be displayed, but employees do not receive a general statutory day off. The date is fixed and does not generate a substitute weekday.

How Independence Day is observed

A national memorial day fixed on June 25, but explicitly a working day rather than a statutory nationwide non-working holiday.

Traditions of Independence Day

  • Parliamentary remembrance

Institutions revisit the June 1991 constitutional decision and referendum mandate through public statements, exhibitions and carefully selected archival material.

  • Flags and civic education

Flags and educational programmes explain the important distinction between sovereignty, independence, the moratorium and October’s final legal separation.

  • Working-day observance

Public life generally follows an ordinary schedule, with commemorative activity fitted around work because June 25 is not non-working.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Croatian government holiday guidance. Local patronal dates and private-employer schedules may apply in addition to the statutory calendar.
