When is Labour Day?

In 2026, Labour Day falls on Friday, May 1, 2026. It is classified here as a Croatian public holiday.

History of Labour Day

Labour Day, Praznik rada, is Croatia’s statutory non-working holiday on May 1 and belongs to the international workers’ movement that campaigned for shorter hours, safe conditions and collective rights. Labour organisation developed through Croatia’s Habsburg, Yugoslav and independent-state periods, giving the date several political layers. Contemporary unions use May Day to discuss wages, pensions, workplace safety and social policy, while municipalities host public gatherings. The official holiday remains civic rather than religious and is fixed in the 2019 Holidays Act.

A recognisable Croatian custom is serving grah, a substantial bean stew, at free municipal or union events in parks and public squares. Zagreb’s Maksimir Park has long been associated with large May Day gatherings, speeches, music and food, while other cities create local versions. Families also take picnics or visit the countryside in spring weather. May 1 is not automatically transferred if it falls at a weekend, and rallies or transport changes can affect city-centre plans even where hospitality businesses continue operating.

How Labour Day is observed

A nationwide statutory non-working day fixed on May 1, with no automatic weekend substitution and possible transport disruption around union rallies.

Traditions of Labour Day

  • Union marches and speeches

Trade unions organise rallies about wages, pensions, working conditions and social rights in Zagreb and other Croatian cities.

  • Public grah servings

Municipalities and organisations distribute portions of bean stew at outdoor gatherings, combining political messages with generously shared food.

  • Maksimir gathering

Zagreb residents traditionally gather in Maksimir Park for music, speeches, picnics and the city’s large Labour Day programme.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Croatian government holiday guidance. Local patronal dates and private-employer schedules may apply in addition to the statutory calendar.
