When is All Souls’ Day?

In 2026, All Souls’ Day falls on Monday, November 2, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.

History of All Souls’ Day

All Souls’ Day, Día de los Difuntos, is a Christian day of prayer and remembrance for the dead. Ecuador’s national holiday calendar gives November 2 statutory status, joining religious memory to a nationwide public break.

The date has deeply rooted Ecuadorian food and cemetery traditions. The national cultural-heritage institute records the preparation of colada morada and guaguas de pan, as well as the custom in some communities of visiting cemeteries and sharing food in remembrance of the deceased.

November 2 and the November 3 Independence of Cuenca holiday are governed together by a special continuous-holidays rule in the 2016 reform. This calendar keeps the commemorative date and calculates the legally substituted rest date alongside it.

Practices are diverse rather than interchangeable. Urban families may make brief flower visits, while some Indigenous communities maintain longer cemetery gatherings and take foods associated with the deceased. Colada morada, made from dark flour, fruits and spices, is widely paired with decorated guaguas de pan. The observance joins Catholic remembrance with older and evolving local relationships to ancestors.
