When is Christmas Day?
In 2026, Christmas Day falls on Friday, December 25, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.
History of Christmas Day
Christmas Day commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ and is one of Ecuador’s major faith and family holidays. It follows the Advent and Christmas Eve season of church services, music, food and gathering across a predominantly Christian country with diverse forms of practice.
Many families attend Mass or another service, share a festive meal and make time for relatives. Nativity scenes, novenas and seasonal music remain important in many communities, although the balance of worship, travel and celebration varies widely by household and region.
December 25 is a compulsory national rest day under LOSEP. It is exempt from the ordinary Tuesday-to-Thursday transfer rule, while the reform’s separate weekend provision still moves a Saturday or Sunday Christmas rest day to Friday or Monday.
Ecuadorian Christmas practice extends beyond the day itself. Novenas, nativity displays and community Pase del Niño processions appear in the wider season, with Cuenca’s major Christmas Eve procession among the best known. These devotional and public traditions should not be assumed everywhere; Christmas Day may instead centre on rest after a late family supper or Misa del Gallo.
How Christmas Day is observed
Christmas Day is a nationwide statutory holiday. Worship, nativity traditions, family meals and visiting relatives follow Christmas Eve celebrations for many households.
Traditions of Christmas Day
Novenas and nativity scenes
Many Catholic households and parishes pray Christmas novenas and arrange nativity scenes during the days leading to the celebration of Christ’s birth.
Misa del Gallo
Christmas Eve or late-night Mass remains important for practising families, with parish schedules varying before the December 25 statutory rest day.
Family supper and visits
Families gather for festive food, gifts and visits, adapting menus and customs to Ecuador’s coastal, Andean, Amazonian and Galápagos settings.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Ecuador official holiday calendar or legislation. Government, regional, school and employer schedules in Ecuador may differ; check the linked official source and current local notices before making time-sensitive plans.
