When is Good Friday?

In 2026, Good Friday falls on Friday, April 3, 2026. It is a paid national holiday under El Salvador’s Labour Code or a specific legislative decree.

History of Good Friday

Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus and is one of the most solemn days in El Salvador’s Christian year. Churches use prayer, readings, music and processions to retell the Passion, often bringing together entire neighborhoods.

The day also falls within a major family and travel period. That contrast is part of Semana Santa: worship and quiet reflection coexist with visiting relatives, beach outings and the practical work of feeding large holiday gatherings.

Good Friday is a paid holiday under Article 190. Workers who perform work on a paid day off should consult Article 192 and their contract or collective agreement for the legal remuneration that applies.

One of the country’s most prominent Good Friday observances is Sonsonate’s Santo Entierro procession. The Ministry of Culture describes a route of roughly 7.5 kilometers lasting into Saturday morning, carried in shifts by hundreds of participants. Residents prepare elaborate street carpets from dyed sawdust, salt, ash, plaster and sand, turning the procession route into a temporary communal artwork.

How Good Friday is observed

Good Friday is a paid national holiday. Church services and processions are common; essential services and tourism follow their own arrangements.

Traditions of Good Friday

  • Passion processions

Parishes walk prescribed routes with sacred images, prayers and devotional music. Events may be intimate or draw large town-center crowds.

  • Prayer and reflection

Families attend services or reserve time at home for prayer and quiet remembrance. The level and form of observance are personal.

  • Meat-free meals

Some households avoid meat and prepare fish, vegetables, soups or sweets. Lenten practice varies by family and denomination.

  • Family time

Relatives who live apart often use the day to reunite. Travelers should allow extra time because many people are on the move.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official El Salvador Labour Code and holiday guidance. Local patronal holidays, public-service vacation periods and employer schedules may differ from the general national rule.
