When is Christmas Eve?

In 2026, Christmas Eve falls on Thursday, December 24, 2026. It is an observance rather than a federal holiday, so federal offices and most businesses follow their normal schedules.

History of Christmas Eve

Christmas Eve, Jouluaatto, carries the principal domestic celebration of Christmas in Finland. The older Christian practice of beginning a feast on the preceding evening helps explain why the sauna, main meal, gifts and family gathering occur on December 24 rather than waiting for Christmas Day. The date’s winter darkness, candles and travel to family homes have made it culturally more prominent than its formal legal classification suggests.

At noon, Turku declares Christmas Peace from the Brinkkala building, continuing a tradition whose documented form reaches back centuries despite interruptions. Radio and television carry the declaration nationwide. Families then visit cemeteries, warm the Christmas sauna and prepare foods such as ham, root-vegetable casseroles, rosolli salad, gingerbread and star-shaped prune pastries before Joulupukki brings gifts.

Christmas Eve is not one of the Church Act’s statutory church holidays. It is excluded from weekdays in the Annual Holidays Act, many collective agreements provide leave and banks, shops and public services commonly close early or entirely. Those practices do not create identical rights for every employee. Health care, transport, hospitality and other essential operations continue under sector-specific rosters and compensation.

How Christmas Eve is observed

A major fixed observance and common closure day, with leave often provided by collective agreement rather than universal public-holiday status.

Traditions of Christmas Eve

  • Declaration of Christmas Peace

People watch or hear Turku’s noon declaration, a civic ceremony that formally opens the peaceful Christmas period across Finland.

  • Christmas sauna

Households take an unhurried sauna before dinner, treating cleanliness, warmth and calm as preparation for the family evening.

  • Joulupukki brings gifts

Children often receive presents from a visiting Joulupukki on Christmas Eve, unlike countries where gifts wait until December 25.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Finnish legal and calendar guidance. Flag days and cultural observances do not automatically mean a general day off.
