When is Bastille Day?

In 2026, Bastille Day falls on Tuesday, July 14, 2026. It is classified here as a French public holiday.

History of Bastille Day

In English the date is commonly called Bastille Day, after the Paris crowd seized the royal fortress-prison on July 14, 1789. That event became a defining symbol of the French Revolution. The official date also evokes July 14, 1790, when the Fête de la Fédération staged a vast ceremony of national reconciliation on the Champ-de-Mars one year after the Bastille’s fall.

When the Third Republic established an annual national holiday in 1880, the short law named simply ‘14 July’ and did not specify a year. That formulation allowed republicans to embrace revolutionary liberty while drawing on the more consensual image of federation and unity. The date has since survived changes of government as France’s principal civic celebration and an international emblem of the Republic.

Modern observance combines state ritual with local festivity. The armed-forces parade in Paris is the most visible official event, but municipal fireworks, concerts, communal meals and bals des pompiers make the holiday intensely local. Celebrations often begin on July 13. July 14 is a legal public holiday, though transport, restaurants and tourist sites may operate on special schedules.

How Bastille Day is observed

July 14 is France’s nationwide legal public holiday and national day; festivities commonly begin on the evening of July 13.
