When is Assumption Day?
In 2026, Assumption Day falls on Saturday, August 15, 2026. It is classified here as a French public holiday.
History of Assumption Day
The Assumption celebrates the Catholic belief that Mary, at the end of her earthly life, was taken body and soul into heavenly glory. The feast developed in the Christian East during late antiquity and was established on August 15 before spreading in the West. Pope Pius XII formally defined the Assumption as Catholic dogma in 1950, affirming a much older devotional tradition.
In France, Marian devotion has given August 15 a particularly visible history through pilgrimages, parish processions and vows. Lourdes is the best-known destination, but local shrines, coastal blessings and village churches create many regional forms. The date is one of four major Catholic feasts retained as nationwide legal public holidays, alongside Ascension, All Saints’ Day and Christmas.
Contemporary practice mixes faith, family and high summer. Practising Catholics attend Mass or a procession, while holidaymakers may encounter village fêtes, concerts and fireworks. Because August 15 falls during the peak vacation period, roads, rail services, resorts and coastal towns can be busy. Legal-holiday status does not mean every private business closes, so local hours remain important.
How Assumption Day is observed
August 15 is a nationwide legal public holiday; worship, pilgrimages and local summer events coexist with tourism and variable commercial opening.
Traditions of Assumption Day
Marian pilgrimages
Pilgrims attend Mass, candlelight prayer and processions at Lourdes and numerous smaller sanctuaries dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
Parish processions
Local congregations carry Marian statues or banners through streets, sometimes linking worship with a blessing of the sea.
High-summer fêtes
Resort towns and villages schedule outdoor concerts, markets, communal meals or fireworks for local residents and peak-season holidaymakers.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official French public-holiday law and government guidance. Alsace-Moselle has additional regional public holidays; employer and local-service schedules can differ.
