When is Assumption Day?
In 2026, Assumption Day falls on Saturday, August 15, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.
History of Assumption Day
Assumption Day in The Gambia, commonly called Sang Marie, celebrates the Catholic belief that Mary was taken into heaven at the end of her earthly life. It is fixed on August 15 and has particular religious significance for Catholic communities. National holiday status does not imply that Anglican, Methodist, Muslim or non-religious residents share the doctrine.
Marian devotion in The Gambia is expressed through parish life shaped by local clergy and congregations rather than a single imported ritual. Catholics may attend Mass, sing Marian hymns or gather with family. Other residents may recognise the day through public closure or interfaith greetings without taking part in Catholic worship.
August 15 is one of the fixed holidays described in the Public Holidays Act. The August 13 State House notice declared Saturday, August 15, 2026 as the holiday but did not name Monday, August 17; despite the 2021 weekend-policy language, this calendar does not invent an unannounced Monday substitute. The Labour Act 2023 recognises remuneration for public holidays and preserves a public holiday that falls during annual leave, but it does not by itself turn every named commemoration into a holiday. The 2021 presidential advisory says a Monday will be declared when a public holiday falls on Saturday or Sunday; because that wording anticipates a declaration, users should still check the dated State House notice rather than assume an automatic statutory substitute.
How Assumption Day is observed
Nationwide public holiday on Saturday, August 15, 2026; the cited 2026 declaration did not appoint Monday as a substitute.
Traditions of Assumption Day
Community practice
Catholics may attend Mass, pray the rosary, sing Marian hymns or share a family meal; participation and language differ between parishes.
Public or religious programme
Parishes announce any procession, choir or special service locally, and other Christian denominations need not follow Catholic teaching about the Assumption.
Planning the holiday
Because the 2026 notice named Saturday only, check official, bank and employer notices before treating Monday as closed.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official The Gambia official holiday calendar or legislation. Government, regional, school and employer schedules in The Gambia may differ; check the linked official source and current local notices before making time-sensitive plans.
