When is Good Friday?

In 2026, Good Friday falls on Friday, April 3, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.

History of Good Friday

Good Friday in The Gambia commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus and falls two days before Western Easter Sunday. Christian communities in Banjul, Kanifing and elsewhere include Catholic, Anglican, Methodist and other congregations whose liturgy and fasting practices are not identical. Its public status gives a minority-faith observance national civic recognition.

Christian institutions developed under several West African and European missionary traditions during the colonial period, but contemporary Gambian Christianity is locally led and practised in a Muslim-majority society noted in public discourse for interfaith relations. Services may include Passion readings, preaching, prayer and restrained music; residents who do not observe the theology may simply experience changed public hours.

Good Friday is one of the fixed religious days identified in the long-standing Public Holidays Act. The Office of the President specifically declared Friday, April 3 and Easter Monday, April 6 as nationwide public holidays in 2026. The Labour Act 2023 recognises remuneration for public holidays and preserves a public holiday that falls during annual leave, but it does not by itself turn every named commemoration into a holiday. The 2021 presidential advisory says a Monday will be declared when a public holiday falls on Saturday or Sunday; because that wording anticipates a declaration, users should still check the dated State House notice rather than assume an automatic statutory substitute.

How Good Friday is observed

Nationwide public holiday on Friday, April 3, 2026, beginning the Easter weekend; Saturday was not separately declared. Current government notices, employer policies and local schedules in Gambia should be checked for closures, substitute dates and public-service arrangements.

Traditions of Good Friday

  • Community practice

Christians may fast, pray, attend a solemn service or follow Stations of the Cross according to denomination, congregation and personal circumstances.

  • Public or religious programme

Churches publish Passion services and music locally; the scale and form of worship differ and are not a single national programme.

  • Planning the holiday

Public offices and many businesses close, but travellers should check Friday transport, health and hospitality schedules individually. Travel, markets and public events follow local patterns, while opening hours depend on the holiday’s legal scope and current official guidance.
