When is Augsburg Peace Festival?
In 2026, Augsburg Peace Festival falls on Saturday, August 8, 2026. It is classified here as a Regional public holiday.
History of Augsburg Peace Festival
The Augsburger Hohe Friedensfest grew from confessional conflict. Protestant worship in Augsburg was suppressed during the Thirty Years’ War; the Peace of Westphalia in 1648 restored legal parity between Catholic and Protestant citizens. Augsburg’s Protestants first celebrated renewed religious rights on August 8, 1650, developing an annual festival anchored in the city’s own history.
Bavaria’s Feiertagsgesetz makes August 8 statutory within the city of Augsburg and nowhere else. It has held legal holiday status since 1950, making Augsburg the only German city with its own municipal holiday. The surrounding Augsburg district follows its ordinary calendar, and a commuter’s workplace location determines whether statutory protection normally applies.
The festival has broadened into a civic programme about peace, pluralism and coexistence. Concerts, debates, interfaith events and children’s activities lead to the public Friedenstafel. Germany’s UNESCO Commission entered it in the national intangible-cultural-heritage inventory in 2018; that recognition concerns living cultural practice and is not a UNESCO World Heritage designation.
How Augsburg Peace Festival is observed
A statutory public holiday only inside Augsburg city; neighbouring Bavarian municipalities and the surrounding district follow their normal calendar.
Traditions of Augsburg Peace Festival
Friedenstafel
Residents and visitors share food at a long public table on Rathausplatz, turning civic dialogue into a visible communal meal.
Peace programme
Weeks of theatre, music, debate, exhibitions and education explore an annual theme connected with peace and social coexistence.
Interfaith remembrance
Churches and civic organisations recall confessional history while inviting participation across religions, beliefs, generations and communities. Modern programmes deliberately extend beyond the festival’s Protestant origins.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official German federal and state holiday law. State-level rules vary substantially; check the relevant Land, employer, school and service schedule.
