When is Assumption Day?
In 2026, Assumption Day falls on Saturday, August 15, 2026. It is classified here as a Regional public holiday.
History of Assumption Day
Mariä Himmelfahrt is the Catholic feast of Mary’s assumption into heavenly glory. Observed on August 15, it has deep roots in European Christianity and remains especially visible in southern Germany. Marian worship, pilgrimage and the blessing of gathered herbs connect formal church teaching with regional rural traditions during the height of the summer season.
Its German legal coverage is unusually precise. August 15 is statutory throughout Saarland. In Bavaria it is statutory only in municipalities officially determined to have a predominantly Catholic population under the Bavarian holiday act; it is not automatically a holiday everywhere in Bavaria. Census-based classifications and municipal notices therefore require attention when official lists change.
Neighbouring Bavarian towns can have different working days, and workplace rather than home location normally governs an employee’s holiday. Catholic parishes may celebrate the feast anywhere, but worship creates no statutory leave outside Saarland and qualifying Bavarian municipalities. Shops, schools and offices close only where the legal geographical condition is satisfied.
How Assumption Day is observed
A statutory holiday throughout Saarland and officially designated Catholic-majority Bavarian municipalities; elsewhere it remains a religious observance. The employee’s workplace municipality normally determines whether the protection applies.
Traditions of Assumption Day
Herb blessing
Parishioners bind gathered herbs and flowers into Kräuterbuschen, which are blessed at Mass and later kept in homes.
Marian worship
Catholic churches celebrate Mass, hymns and processions, with established pilgrimage destinations drawing visitors from surrounding communities. The strongest public traditions remain concentrated in Catholic regions.
Municipal calendar checks
Bavarian residents and employers consult official classifications because legal holiday status can differ across a short daily commute.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official German federal and state holiday law. State-level rules vary substantially; check the relevant Land, employer, school and service schedule.
