When is Christmas Day?
In 2026, Christmas Day falls on Friday, December 25, 2026. It is classified here as a German public holiday.
History of Christmas Day
Erster Weihnachtsfeiertag celebrates Jesus’s birth. German-speaking regions helped shape international Christmas culture through Advent calendars, decorated trees, markets, hymns and domestic gifts, although no custom arose in one place alone. December 25 is the statutory holiday; Advent markets occur beforehand and Christmas Eve has powerful social importance without the same legal status.
Every Land protects December 25 and commonly grants heightened quiet-day protection. Heiligabend, December 24, is not statutory even though employers may shorten work and shops close early under trading rules. Because German families often exchange gifts on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day usually has a slower rhythm of worship, meals and visits.
Ordinary shops, banks, schools and public administration close. Hospitals, care, hospitality, passenger transport and exempt work continue, often with reduced schedules. Religious practice varies and many celebrate culturally, but protection is not conditional on faith. Germany does not transfer December 25 to Monday when it falls on a weekend.
How Christmas Day is observed
A statutory public holiday in all sixteen Länder, generally with strong quiet-day protection; Christmas Eve remains a separate non-statutory working day.
Traditions of Christmas Day
Christmas meal
Families gather for lunch or dinner, with menus ranging from roast goose and dumplings to regional household favourites.
Worship and music
Churches hold services with carols, organ music and Christmas readings while broadcasters schedule established seasonal concerts. Bach, carols and regional musical traditions frequently share the programme.
Family visits
After Christmas Eve gifts, households welcome relatives, call distant family members or take an unhurried winter walk. Households often divide visits between the two statutory Christmas days.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official German federal and state holiday law. State-level rules vary substantially; check the relevant Land, employer, school and service schedule.
