When is National Heroes’ Day?
In 2026, National Heroes’ Day falls on Monday, October 19, 2026. It is a Grenadian public holiday. Bank and public-office closures apply under the annual Cabinet Office calendar, subject to essential-service and employer arrangements.
History of National Heroes’ Day
National Heroes’ Day is observed on October 19, the date in 1983 when Prime Minister Maurice Bishop, cabinet colleagues and civilians were killed at Fort Rupert, now Fort George, during the terminal crisis of the People’s Revolutionary Government. Their deaths and the subsequent breakdown of authority preceded the Caribbean and United States intervention on October 25. The holiday asks Grenadians to confront a painful national rupture rather than reducing ‘heroism’ to an uncomplicated celebration.
The first National Heroes’ Day was proclaimed for October 19, 2023. Its public program included ecumenical worship, wreath laying, a nationwide tolling of church bells, silence and an evening light tribute. Government language emphasized remembrance, recovery, healing, reconciliation, unity and advancement. Although Maurice Bishop’s life is central to the date, the holiday’s name does not mean that every person commemorated has formally received Grenada’s Order of the National Hero.
Legislation subsequently placed October 19 in the permanent holiday schedule, and the official 2025 calendar lists Sunday, October 19 with Monday, October 20 as the observed day. This corrects the former assumption that the holiday fell on the second Monday of October. Schools, families and civic organizations may discuss contested memories of revolution, violence and loss while honouring service and imagining a more inclusive national-heroes framework.

Traditions of National Heroes’ Day
Fort George remembrance
Wreaths, speeches and historical reflection focus attention on the site where Maurice Bishop and others were killed on October 19, 1983.
Bells, silence and light
Commemorative programs may use church bells, a shared minute of silence and candlelight to create a national language of mourning.
Difficult history in dialogue
Schools and families discuss revolution, internal conflict, loss and reconciliation without assuming that Grenadians hold one interpretation of 1983.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Grenada Cabinet Office public-holiday calendar. Grenada’s Cabinet Office publishes the annual calendar; Sunday bank holidays are generally observed on the following Monday and special holiday notices control any exception.
