When is Independence Day?

In 2026, Independence Day falls on Tuesday, May 26, 2026. It is a Guyanese public holiday. Government offices and many businesses close, subject to essential-service and employer arrangements.

History of Independence Day

Independence Day marks May 26, 1966, when British Guiana became the independent state of Guyana after centuries of Dutch and British colonial rule. The achievement followed constitutional reform, mass political organisation and difficult negotiations in Britain. It also came after intense labour conflict and communal violence, so the founding moment carried both hopes for self-government and an urgent need to build trust across political and ethnic divisions.

At midnight, the Golden Arrowhead replaced the Union Jack and Guyana’s new national symbols entered public life. Forbes Burnham became the first prime minister of independent Guyana, while the British monarch remained formal head of state until republican status followed in 1970. That sequence explains why Independence Day and Republic Day are separate anniversaries: May 26 marks sovereign statehood; February 23 marks the later constitutional republic.

Modern observances centre on a national flag-raising, presidential and civic addresses, cultural performances and school programmes. The anniversary is celebrated across Guyana’s regions and among diaspora communities, often with concerts or community gatherings. May 26 is not named in the 2012 schedule of the Public Holidays Act, but it is appointed under the minister’s section 6 power and consistently appears in official annual calendars as a public holiday.

How Independence Day is observed

Independence Day is a nationwide public holiday on May 26. Flag ceremonies and public programmes may change traffic, security and opening hours near event venues.
