When is Labour Day?
In 2026, Labour Day falls on Friday, May 1, 2026. It is a Guyanese public holiday. Government offices and many businesses close, subject to essential-service and employer arrangements.
History of Labour Day
Labour Day in Guyana joins the international May Day tradition with a national trade-union history centred on Hubert Nathaniel Critchlow. A dockworker and organiser, Critchlow led the British Guiana Labour Union, registered in 1919 and widely recognised as the first legally established trade union in the British Caribbean. His campaigns for organisation, wages and improved working conditions made him an enduring symbol of Guyanese labour activism.
Official labour histories trace British Guiana’s May Day demonstrations to the 1930s. They were not originally leisure celebrations: workers used marches and meetings to challenge poor living and working conditions and press the colonial administration for reform. Wreath-laying at Critchlow’s monument, union processions through Georgetown and rallies developed as recurring forms, although the programme and degree of unity among labour organisations have varied over time.
The Public Holidays Act names Labour Day as May 1 and moves it to the following day when May 1 is Sunday. The holiday recognises formal and informal workers across agriculture, mining, transport, public service, commerce, care and other sectors. It also remains a platform for unions to raise contemporary questions of decent work, occupational safety, wages, representation and social protection in Guyana.
How Labour Day is observed
Labour Day is a nationwide public holiday on May 1, or Monday when it falls Sunday; union marches and rallies may affect Georgetown traffic.
Traditions of Labour Day
Trade-union march
Union members carry banners and march through Georgetown before rallies that combine worker solidarity with current demands on pay and conditions.
Critchlow remembrance
Wreaths and speeches honour Hubert Nathaniel Critchlow, whose organising made him a central figure in Guyana’s modern labour history.
May Day addresses
Labour organisations and public officials review workplace achievements and debate unfinished issues such as safety, representation, wages and social protection.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Guyana Public Holidays Act and ministry notices. Guyana publishes lunar festival dates and appointed holiday dates by ministerial notice; workplace and essential-service arrangements may vary.
