When is Good Friday?
In 2026, Good Friday falls on Friday, April 3, 2026. It is classified here as a Hong Kong public holiday.
History of Good Friday
Good Friday in Hong Kong commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and begins the territory's Western Christian Easter sequence. Its place in the general-holiday calendar reflects historical institutions and continuing Christian communities, but denominations and language groups observe it differently. Solemn liturgy, scripture, fasting and prayer are important for participating congregations; travel and leisure are separate public uses of the break rather than the feast's origin.
In 2026 Good Friday fell on April 3, two days before Western Easter Sunday. It was a general holiday but not yet an Employment Ordinance statutory holiday. The phased 2021 amendment adds Easter Monday from 2026, Good Friday from 2028 and the following day from 2030. Calling every Easter date statutory in 2026 would overstate minimum employment rights, although contracts and sectors may provide the broader general-holiday calendar.
All employees covered by Hong Kong's Employment Ordinance receive statutory holidays regardless of service length; holiday pay requires a continuous contract of at least three months. General holidays and statutory holidays are overlapping but legally distinct lists. Government offices and many banks commonly close on general holidays, while transport, health care, hospitality, retail and other essential or commercial services may remain open. Required statutory-holiday work triggers the alternative or substituted holiday arrangements set out by the Labour Department.
