When is Christmas Day?
In 2026, Christmas Day falls on Friday, December 25, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.
History of Christmas Day
Christmas Day in Kenya commemorates the birth of Jesus and is fixed on December 25 in Part I. Catholic, Anglican, Presbyterian, Methodist, evangelical, African instituted and other churches have distinct worship traditions. The nationwide public holiday allows Christian celebration and a general year-end pause without requiring Kenyans of other faiths to adopt Christian belief.
Christmas travel often reconnects urban residents with relatives elsewhere, but ‘going upcountry’ is not possible or desired for every household. Churches hold Christmas Eve or morning services; families may share nyama choma, chicken, chapati or regional foods and give clothing or gifts according to means. High prices, work rosters and distance produce very different experiences across the country.
Christmas Day is a fixed Part I public holiday and falls on Friday in 2026. Its placement creates no substitute day; Boxing Day remains its own separate Saturday holiday. Section 4 of the Public Holidays Act substitutes only a Part I holiday that falls on Sunday, using the first succeeding non-holiday; it creates no automatic Monday holiday for a Saturday date and does not extend to the faith-specific days in Parts II and III. Section 5 allows government departments to open and employees to work where another law or agreement provides the applicable pay or time off, so a public holiday is not proof that every service closes.
How Christmas Day is observed
Nationwide public holiday on Friday, December 25, 2026, followed by the separately listed Boxing Day on Saturday. Current government notices, employer policies and local schedules in Kenya should be checked for closures, substitute dates and public-service arrangements.
Traditions of Christmas Day
Church services
Christian congregations announce Christmas Eve and morning worship with scripture, choirs and children’s participation suited to their denomination.
Homecoming and meals
Families may travel, visit and prepare a special meal, but destinations, foods and gift-giving vary with culture, cost and personal circumstance.
Busy year-end travel
Book inter-county transport early and check health, security, hospitality and retail schedules, since many essential and customer-facing workers remain on duty.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Kenya official holiday calendar or legislation. Government, regional, school and employer schedules in Kenya may differ; check the linked official source and current local notices before making time-sensitive plans.
