When is Good Friday?
In 2026, Good Friday falls on Friday, April 3, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.
History of Good Friday
Good Friday in Kenya commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus and falls two days before Western Easter Sunday. Catholic, Anglican, Presbyterian, Methodist, evangelical, African instituted and other churches may observe the day, but liturgy, fasting and public expression differ. Its Part I status makes it a nationwide civil holiday without requiring residents of other faiths to take part in Christian worship.
Christianity in Kenya reflects missionary-era institutions as well as long histories of Kenyan clergy, independent churches and local congregations. Good Friday services may include Passion readings, preaching, Stations of the Cross, restrained music or prayer. Church leaders also use Easter messages to address peace, economic pressure and public ethics, connecting theology with current life without speaking for every Christian.
Good Friday is a Part I public holiday whose date follows Western Easter. It falls on April 3 in 2026 and already begins a statutory long weekend completed by Easter Monday. Section 4 of the Public Holidays Act substitutes only a Part I holiday that falls on Sunday, using the first succeeding non-holiday; it creates no automatic Monday holiday for a Saturday date and does not extend to the faith-specific days in Parts II and III. Section 5 allows government departments to open and employees to work where another law or agreement provides the applicable pay or time off, so a public holiday is not proof that every service closes.
