When is Labour Day?

In 2026, Labour Day falls on Friday, May 1, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.

History of Labour Day

Kiribati's Labour Day joins the international May Day tradition of recognising workers and their contribution to public and community life. It is especially meaningful alongside the country's employment framework, which establishes protections for leave, wages and workplace relations.

The national holiday gives a shared pause for employees, families and public services. It also points to the many forms work takes in Kiribati: formal employment, fishing, care, education, transport and the everyday labour that supports island communities.

The holiday connects Kiribati with the international workers' movement, but its practical significance is grounded in national employment law. The Employment and Industrial Relations Code regulates matters including contracts, wages and industrial relations and provides the framework for paid public holidays. Work in Kiribati includes public administration, education, health, fisheries, transport, retail, construction, care and subsistence activity; the formal labour force is only part of the work sustaining households and islands. The day does not mean all services cease, and workers rostered in essential or commercial operations should verify their entitlement and compensation under current law and agreements.

Traditions of Labour Day

  • Community practice

Workplaces and public messages may recognise employees and service, while unions or organisations choose their own current programmes and themes.

  • Living tradition

Families often treat the paid break as time for meals, sport or rest rather than as participation in a mandatory national ceremony.

  • Planning and participation

Rostered workers confirm holiday pay and time-off arrangements with their employer because public-holiday rights do not depend solely on whether premises remain open.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Kiribati official holiday calendar or legislation. Government, regional, school and employer schedules in Kiribati may differ; check the linked official source and current local notices before making time-sensitive plans.
