When is Europe Day?
In 2026, Europe Day falls on Saturday, May 9, 2026. Because the date falls on a weekend, many workplaces observe a substitute day on Monday, May 11, 2026; exact rules depend on the applicable jurisdiction and schedule.
History of Europe Day
Europe Day is observed on May 9, the anniversary of French foreign minister Robert Schuman's 1950 declaration proposing pooled coal and steel production. The proposal helped begin the integration process that eventually produced the European Union. Kosovo is unusual in making the date a nationwide paid public holiday, giving European cooperation a formal place alongside civic, labour and religious holidays.
The day has particular public resonance because European integration has long shaped Kosovo's institutional reforms, education programmes and international partnerships. EU offices, government institutions, schools and civil-society organisations may organise debates, cultural events and information activities. Such programmes discuss both Europe's post-war peace project and contemporary questions such as mobility, democracy and accession-related reform.
Europe Day's domestic status comes from Article 2 of the official-holidays law, independently of Kosovo's relationship with the European Union. If May 9 falls on Saturday or Sunday, a following working day becomes leave. The annual schedule is therefore essential: in 2026, May 9 falls on Saturday and the published substitute is Monday, May 11.
How Europe Day is observed
Europe Day is a paid, nationwide non-working day under Law No. 03/L-064. It is fixed on May 9; the 2026 weekend substitute falls on Monday, May 11. If it falls on Saturday or Sunday, the law assigns the next available working day as leave; essential services may operate under separate arrangements.
Traditions of Europe Day
European information events
EU-related institutions and civil-society partners organise talks, open events and information campaigns about cooperation and European programmes available locally.
Youth activities
Schools and youth groups may hold quizzes, debates, exhibitions or workshops examining European history, rights, mobility and civic responsibility.
Cultural programmes
Concerts, film screenings and public-space events present Kosovo's cultural links with the wider European continent to varied audiences.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Kosovo official holiday law and government calendar. Islamic dates and weekend substitutions should be confirmed against the annual official calendar and employer schedules.
