When is Eid al-Adha?
In 2026, Eid al-Adha falls on Wednesday, May 27, 2026. It is classified here as a Kosovo public holiday.
History of Eid al-Adha
Eid al-Adha, commonly called Kurban Bajrami in Kosovo, recalls Abraham's willingness to obey God and coincides with the period of the Hajj pilgrimage. The feast begins with congregational prayer. Households able and choosing to perform the ritual sacrifice distribute portions among family, neighbours and people in need, making generosity rather than private consumption central to the observance.
Kosovo's law lists the first day among the official paid holidays. The inclusion applies nationwide and sits alongside Catholic and Orthodox Christian dates in a calendar designed to recognise several religious communities. The Islamic Community of Kosovo's 2026 calendar places Kurban Bajrami on Wednesday, May 27, following the eve on May 26.
Because the Islamic calendar is lunar, the Gregorian date changes every year and calculated dates remain estimates until confirmed. This implementation follows the Umm al-Qura calculation, which produces the published 2026 date, while clearly deferring to the annual state calendar and the Islamic Community if a later announcement differs.
How Eid al-Adha is observed
The first day of Eid al-Adha is a paid, nationwide non-working day under Law No. 03/L-064. Its lunar date is confirmed through the annual state and Islamic Community calendars. If it falls on Saturday or Sunday, the law assigns the next available working day as leave; essential services may operate under separate arrangements.
Traditions of Eid al-Adha
Morning prayer
Mosques receive worshippers for the congregational Bajram prayer before family visits and the day's charitable responsibilities begin in earnest.
Sacrifice and distribution
Participating households divide meat among relatives, neighbours and people needing support, following the feast's ethic of generous sharing.
Respectful visits
Families visit elders and relatives, exchange greetings and offer coffee, savoury dishes and sweets to a succession of guests.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Kosovo official holiday law and government calendar. Islamic dates and weekend substitutions should be confirmed against the annual official calendar and employer schedules.
