When is Orthodox Easter Monday?

In 2026, Orthodox Easter Monday falls on Monday, April 13, 2026. It is classified here as a Kosovo public holiday.

History of Orthodox Easter Monday

Orthodox Easter Monday follows the principal celebration of Christ's Resurrection in Orthodox Christianity. The Paschal season is especially significant in Kosovo Serb Orthodox parishes and monasteries, where Holy Week services lead to the midnight proclamation and Sunday liturgy. Monday allows family visits, shared meals and continued exchange of the Paschal greeting after the intense worship of the preceding days.

Kosovo's official calendar lists Orthodox and Catholic Easter Monday independently because their calculations often produce different dates. Orthodox Easter is determined through the Julian computus and then expressed on the Gregorian civil calendar. The conversion offset is thirteen days in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, but it changes in later centuries and should not be hard-coded permanently.

The holiday is paid leave for workers nationwide, not only for Orthodox Christians. Parish and monastery timetables govern worship, while state notices govern civil closure. Because the statutory holiday is Monday by definition, the general weekend-substitution provision normally does not need to be applied.

How Orthodox Easter Monday is observed

Orthodox Easter Monday is a paid, nationwide non-working day under Law No. 03/L-064. It always falls on the Monday immediately after Orthodox Easter Sunday. If it falls on Saturday or Sunday, the law assigns the next available working day as leave; essential services may operate under separate arrangements.

Traditions of Orthodox Easter Monday

  • Paschal greeting

Worshippers continue exchanging the traditional resurrection greeting during visits, parish gatherings and encounters throughout the extended Easter season.

  • Red eggs

Families dye eggs, often predominantly red, and share or tap them as a visible symbol of the Resurrection.

  • Monastery and family visits

The public holiday permits visits to relatives, churches or monasteries after the central midnight and Sunday liturgies have concluded.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Kosovo official holiday law and government calendar. Islamic dates and weekend substitutions should be confirmed against the annual official calendar and employer schedules.
