When is Labour Day?

In 2026, Labour Day falls on Friday, May 1, 2026. It is classified here as a Kyrgyz public holiday.

History of Labour Day

Labour Day belongs to the international May Day tradition, which grew from workers’ movements demanding fair conditions, shorter hours and social dignity. In Kyrgyzstan the date also opens the early-May holiday period created by the current Labour Code, so it is often experienced as the beginning of a wider family and spring break.

The public meaning can range from union and civic events to a simple day outdoors with relatives. Its position next to Constitution Day and Victory Day gives the first weeks of May an unusually concentrated mix of labour history, constitutional memory, wartime remembrance and everyday leisure.

May 1 is both the named Labour Day and the first day of the statutory May vacation. The 2025 Labour Code does not rely on annual transfers for this long break: May 1–4 and May 6–8 are themselves non-working vacation days, with Constitution Day on May 5 and Victory Day on May 9. Work on these dates is restricted and compensated under Article 67. Labour Day’s Soviet-era public legacy coexists with the older international workers’ movement and contemporary concerns about wages, migration and employment rights.

How Labour Day is observed

A nationwide non-working public holiday on May 1. It begins a statutory May holiday period; public offices close and other services set their own hours.
