When is Independence Day?
In 2026, Independence Day falls on Sunday, July 26, 2026. Because the date falls on a weekend, many workplaces observe a substitute day on Monday, July 27, 2026; exact rules depend on the applicable jurisdiction and schedule.
History of Independence Day
Independence Day commemorates July 26, 1847, when delegates declared the Commonwealth of Liberia sovereign. Independence enabled the settler government to make commercial laws and seek recognition as British and French power expanded; Britain recognised Liberia in 1848, while the United States waited until 1862. Joseph Jenkins Roberts became first president under the 1847 order.
This was independence from the American Colonization Society, not decolonisation of a previously unified Liberian nation. The Society’s motives ranged from antislavery to racial separation and protecting slavery, and many Black abolitionists opposed it. Indigenous peoples already governed the territory; land acquisition involved resistance and coercion, and the settler republic denied most Indigenous Liberians equal power. Black sovereignty and this unequal founding are both part of the anniversary.
Independence Day is one of the twelve national public holidays in the Liberia National Tourism Authority’s current calendar. Government offices, banks and many businesses close, while essential services and workplace arrangements can differ. A national holiday falling on Sunday is observed the following Monday; the guidance gives no equivalent automatic Monday substitute for Saturday. Presidents may proclaim special additional holidays, so annual notices still matter.

Traditions of Independence Day
National honours
The programme may include flag raising, inspection of troops, presentation of colours and a military pass-in-review. National and local institutions may hold flag-raising events, commemorations or official addresses connected with the history behind the holiday.
County host
Buchanan hosts the 2026 central observance, while counties, diaspora groups and missions arrange local programmes. Schools, museums and broadcasters often revisit the people and events associated with the date, adding context to the public celebration.
Culture and family
Families share food, music, dress and performances, with practices differing across counties and communities. Concerts, parades, memorial visits or family gatherings allow communities to mark the occasion beyond the formal state programme.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Liberia official holiday calendar or legislation. Government, regional, school and employer schedules in Liberia may differ; check the linked official source and current local notices before making time-sensitive plans.
