When is Eid al-Fitr?

In 2026, Eid al-Fitr falls on Saturday, March 21, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.

History of Eid al-Fitr

Islam has deep roots in Malawi through nineteenth-century trade networks and Yao communities, followed by mosques, schools and organisations serving a diverse Muslim population. Eid al-Fitr closes Ramadan's month of dawn-to-sunset fasting and combines communal worship with the duty of zakat al-fitr so people in need can share the feast.

The Gregorian date is not fixed in advance because the festival begins with Shawwal and local authorities assess reports of the new crescent. In 2026 some worshippers prayed on Friday, March 20, but Malawi's National Moon Sighting Committee reported no qualifying sighting for that date and set the nationally announced Eid prayers for Saturday, March 21; the public holiday was observed Monday, March 23 under the weekend rule.

The day is named in the Schedule to Malawi's Public Holidays Act. Section 4 moves a scheduled holiday that falls on Saturday or Sunday to the next day that is neither Sunday nor already a public holiday, and the original date then ceases to be the statutory holiday; the express exception is the Saturday after Good Friday. Sections 39–40 of the Employment Act provide paid leave for qualifying employees and additional pay when they work on a public holiday, subject to the Act's attendance provisos.

How Eid al-Fitr is observed

Religious observance was Saturday, March 21 in 2026; because that scheduled holiday fell on Saturday, the statutory public holiday transferred to Monday, March 23. Major open-air or mosque prayers take place in the morning, followed by visits, meals and charity. Moon-sighting announcements remain authoritative for worship timing.

Traditions of Eid al-Fitr

  • Moon-sighting confirmation

Mosques and households await the National Moon Sighting Committee's Shawwal announcement; genuine differences in sighting practice can produce more than one local prayer date.

  • Congregational Eid prayer

Worshippers bathe, dress neatly and gather at mosques or open prayer grounds for takbir, sermon and the special morning prayer.

  • Zakat, meals and visits

Zakat al-fitr is given before prayer where possible; families then share food, visit relatives and neighbours, and extend support to patients and households with fewer resources.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Malawi official holiday calendar or legislation. Government, regional, school and employer schedules in Malawi may differ; check the linked official source and current local notices before making time-sensitive plans.
