When is Good Friday?

In 2026, Good Friday falls on Friday, April 3, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.

History of Good Friday

Good Friday belongs to the Western Christian Easter cycle and reached Malawi through several missionary traditions in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Catholic, Presbyterian, Anglican, Methodist and newer churches now observe it in distinct liturgical styles, so no single ceremony represents all Malawian Christians.

The day remembers Jesus's crucifixion and begins an unusual three-part statutory sequence: Good Friday, the following Saturday and Easter Monday are each separately named in Malawi's Schedule. In 2026 Western Easter falls on 5 April, placing Good Friday on 3 April.

The day is named in the Schedule to Malawi's Public Holidays Act. Section 4 moves a scheduled holiday that falls on Saturday or Sunday to the next day that is neither Sunday nor already a public holiday, and the original date then ceases to be the statutory holiday; the express exception is the Saturday after Good Friday. Sections 39–40 of the Employment Act provide paid leave for qualifying employees and additional pay when they work on a public holiday, subject to the Act's attendance provisos.

How Good Friday is observed

Nationwide on Friday, April 3 in 2026. Churches hold services and public processions; public offices and most formal workplaces close, although essential services and some shops operate. The holiday is followed by the separately statutory Easter Saturday.

Traditions of Good Friday

  • Way of the Cross

Catholic and ecumenical groups walk public routes in places such as Lilongwe, stopping for scripture, prayer and reflection on the stations of the cross.

  • Solemn worship

Congregations use preaching, hymns, silence and readings of the Passion; music and service length vary markedly by denomination.

  • Fasting and practical charity

Some Christians fast or simplify meals and organise offerings or support for vulnerable neighbours, connecting the Passion narrative with present suffering.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Malawi official holiday calendar or legislation. Government, regional, school and employer schedules in Malawi may differ; check the linked official source and current local notices before making time-sensitive plans.
