When is Independence Day?

In 2026, Independence Day falls on Sunday, July 26, 2026. It is classified here as a Maldivian public holiday.

History of Independence Day

Maldives Independence Day is observed on July 26 and commemorates 1965, when the Maldives ended the British protectorate relationship and became fully independent. The date is a cornerstone of the modern national calendar: it joins a much older island history to the sovereignty of the contemporary republic. Official messages often emphasise self-determination, national unity and the responsibility of citizens to protect the country’s independence.

Britain recognised Maldivian sovereignty through the agreement signed on July 26, 1965, ending a protectorate relationship under which Britain had exercised control over external affairs while Maldivian rulers retained domestic authority. Independence did not itself create the republic—the Second Republic followed in 1968—so Independence Day and Republic Day commemorate different constitutional milestones. Neutral historical description should distinguish the legal transition from later political narratives promoted by individual governments.

The official 2026 calendar lists Sunday, July 26 as Independence Day and Monday, July 27 as an additional holiday for the occasion. The second date is expressly calendared; it should not be described as proof of a general automatic substitution rule. Ceremonies, flag displays, school cadet events and island programmes vary annually. Government offices close, while resorts, airports, ferries, health services and utilities continue with lawful rosters.
