When is Assumption Day?

In 2026, Assumption Day falls on Saturday, August 15, 2026. It is classified here as a Monegasque public holiday.

History of Assumption Day

The Assumption of Mary is a legal paid public holiday in Monaco on August 15. Catholic teaching celebrates Mary’s being taken into heavenly glory, and the feast occupies an established place in the Archdiocese’s summer calendar. Unlike Monaco’s patronal feast of Saint Devota, Assumption is part of the broader Catholic calendar, but it remains one of the twelve legal holidays expressly published for the principality’s employees.

Monaco Cathedral and parish churches schedule Masses and offices for the feast. In 2026 the cathedral programme included French, English and Italian services, reflecting the principality’s international worshipping community, as well as lauds and vespers. Individual parishes may also organise a Marian procession, but there is no single obligatory state procession covering the whole country. August tourism and holiday travel mean that venues and transport can follow special seasonal schedules in addition to legal closure rules.

Monaco’s Law No. 800 makes the legal holidays in Law No. 798 compulsory paid non-working days for employees, subject to the law’s stated exceptions. Payment is also protected when the date meets an employee’s weekly rest day or a day normally not worked. The annual Labour Directorate circular supplies the operative calendar and reports a fixed holiday falling on Sunday to Monday; it does not create a general Saturday-to-Monday transfer.

Traditions of Assumption Day

  • Multilingual cathedral Masses

The cathedral may offer Assumption services in French, English and Italian, serving Monaco’s resident and visiting Catholic communities.

  • Lauds and vespers

Morning and evening prayer frame the feast in the cathedral schedule, extending observance beyond the principal daytime Mass.

  • Local Marian processions

Some Monaco parishes arrange a Mass with procession, while the route and timing depend on the local annual programme.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Monaco official paid-holidays circular. Private-sector arrangements and essential services may follow separate schedules.
