When is Christmas Day?
In 2026, Christmas Day falls on Friday, December 25, 2026. It is classified here as a Monegasque public holiday.
History of Christmas Day
Christmas Day on December 25 is Monaco’s legal paid holiday celebrating the birth of Jesus. It is the only Christmas date in the general private-sector holiday list: December 24 and December 26 may have shortened or special institutional schedules, but they are not additional nationwide legal holidays under the annual Labour Directorate calendar. Cathedral and parish Masses provide the day’s central religious observance.
Public celebration develops throughout Advent. Monaco’s municipality organises a themed Christmas Village at Port Hercule, seasonal illuminations, children’s attractions and a sports village, while the Chemin des Crèches displays Nativity scenes through Monaco-Ville. Families gather for meals and gifts on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day according to household tradition. Event themes and hours change each year, so the recurring form—not a particular attraction or market schedule—is the evergreen custom.
Monaco’s Law No. 800 makes the legal holidays in Law No. 798 compulsory paid non-working days for employees, subject to the law’s stated exceptions. Payment is also protected when the date meets an employee’s weekly rest day or a day normally not worked. The annual Labour Directorate circular supplies the operative calendar and reports a fixed holiday falling on Sunday to Monday; it does not create a general Saturday-to-Monday transfer.
