When is Independence Manifesto Day?
In 2026, Independence Manifesto Day falls on Sunday, January 11, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.
History of Independence Manifesto Day
Independence Manifesto Day recalls January 11, 1944, when Moroccan nationalists presented a document demanding full independence, national unity under Sultan Mohammed ben Youssef and a democratic constitutional system. The public demand sharpened an independence movement that had developed under the French and Spanish protectorate arrangements.
The manifesto was an important organised declaration, not the moment independence legally took effect: France recognised Moroccan independence on March 2, 1956 and Spain ended its northern protectorate the following month. Official memory emphasises cooperation between the nationalist movement and the Sultan, while a fuller history also includes labour, rural resistance and competing political currents.
Independence Manifesto Day is a paid, non-working holiday under Moroccoβs public-administration Decree 2-77-169 as amended; paid holidays for covered agricultural and non-agricultural employment are governed by Decree 2-04-426 and Labour Code Articles 217β223. The decrees do not create an automatic Monday substitute when a holiday falls at the weekend. A bridge or exceptional closure requires a separate decision, as the Government issued for March 23, 2026.
How Independence Manifesto Day is observed
Nationwide paid holiday on Sunday, January 11, 2026; the decrees provide no automatic Monday substitute. Current government notices, employer policies and local schedules in Morocco should be checked for closures, substitute dates and public-service arrangements.
