When is Good Friday?

In 2026, Good Friday falls on Friday, April 3, 2026. It is an observance rather than a federal holiday, so federal offices and most businesses follow their normal schedules.

History of Good Friday

Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus on the Friday before Easter Sunday. Catholic, Anglican, Methodist, Presbyterian, evangelical and independent churches in Mozambique may mark the Passion through distinct liturgies, preaching, prayer or fasting. The date moves with Western Easter and is a Christian observance, not a practice that should be attributed to Muslim, Indigenous-faith or non-religious residents.

Mozambique does not include Good Friday in Article 105’s national-holiday list. Instead, the Labour Minister can grant tolerância de ponto, a legally regulated suspension of work without loss of remuneration. For Friday, April 3, 2026, the Minister granted that leave nationwide to public- and private-sector workers who profess Christianity, while uninterrupted activities remained excluded.

Good Friday is not one of Mozambique’s nine mandatory national holidays. Article 106 of Labour Law 13/2023 governs ministerial tolerância de ponto, preserves remuneration for covered workers and excludes the uninterrupted activities listed in Article 105. The calendar can compute Good Friday in later years as an observance, but it must not promise leave unless a new ministerial notice confirms it.

How Good Friday is observed

Christian observance on Friday, April 3, 2026, with paid administrative leave granted that year to qualifying Christian workers nationwide.

Traditions of Good Friday

  • Community observance

Christian households may attend a Passion service, pray, fast or keep a restrained day according to denomination, health and personal conviction. Customs and participation differ across Mozambique’s provinces, faiths, languages and household circumstances.

  • Public programme

Congregations may arrange scripture readings, sermons, Stations of the Cross or other Holy Week worship according to their own traditions. The actual programme, venue and access arrangements are set by the responsible institution for that year.

  • Planning the day

Workers should verify each year’s ministerial notice because the religious date recurs annually but tolerância de ponto is a separate administrative decision. Health, transport, utilities, hospitality and other uninterrupted services can remain operational under the Labour Law.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Mozambique cultural, civic or religious guidance. Government, regional, school and employer schedules in Mozambique may differ; check the linked official source and current local notices before making time-sensitive plans.
