When is New Year’s Day?
In 2026, New Year’s Day falls on Thursday, January 1, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.
History of New Year’s Day
New Year’s Day opens Mozambique’s civil calendar on January 1. The holiday is secular in law, even though individual households may connect it with prayer, nightlife, family visits or no special ritual. Its position in the national calendar reflects the country’s use of the Gregorian year for government, education and commerce rather than a claim that one style of celebration spans every province.
The current legal basis is Article 105 of Labour Law 13/2023, which carried forward January 1 as Ano Novo among nine mandatory national holidays. In 2026 it falls on Thursday. Friday, January 2 is not an automatic bridge day, because Mozambique’s statutory carryover rule applies only when the holiday itself falls on Sunday.
Article 105 of Labour Law 13/2023 lists January 1, Ano Novo as a mandatory national holiday and suspends work for covered workers throughout Mozambique. The suspension excludes specified activities that cannot be interrupted. Authorised holiday work attracts exceptional-work remuneration and compensatory rest under Articles 98 and 105. Only a holiday falling on Sunday is deferred to Monday; the law creates no automatic substitute for Saturday.
How New Year’s Day is observed
Mandatory national holiday on Thursday, January 1, 2026; neither Friday nor a later weekday is automatically added under the Sunday-only rule.
Traditions of New Year’s Day
Community observance
Some households exchange New Year greetings, visit relatives, attend worship or share food after the previous evening’s private or public celebrations. Customs and participation differ across Mozambique’s provinces, faiths, languages and household circumstances.
Public programme
Broadcasters, municipalities, congregations and hospitality venues may offer countdowns, music, messages or services, without one programme defining the whole country. The actual programme, venue and access arrangements are set by the responsible institution for that year.
Planning the day
Travellers should confirm January 2 school, office and business hours because a Thursday holiday does not itself create a four-day break. Health, transport, utilities, hospitality and other uninterrupted services can remain operational under the Labour Law.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Mozambique official holiday calendar or legislation. Government, regional, school and employer schedules in Mozambique may differ; check the linked official source and current local notices before making time-sensitive plans.
