When is Family Day?

In 2026, Family Day falls on Friday, December 25, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.

History of Family Day

Family Day is the official Mozambican name for the December 25 national holiday. Christians also celebrate Christmas and the birth of Jesus on that date, while the legal title provides a civic frame available to residents of other faiths or none. The distinction matters in a religiously diverse country: it is inaccurate either to rename the statutory holiday ‘Christmas Day’ or to deny its Christian meaning for many households.

The relationship between the secular title and religious practice has sometimes generated debate about equal state recognition of Muslim festivals. Mozambique now addresses Good Friday and Eid al-Fitr through targeted tolerância de ponto rather than adding them to the nine-holiday statutory list. Family Day itself is associated with presidential greetings and, in some years, pardons; in December 2025 the President granted clemency to 578 prisoners in connection with the occasion.

Article 105 of Labour Law 13/2023 lists December 25, Family Day as a mandatory national holiday and suspends work for covered workers throughout Mozambique. The suspension excludes specified activities that cannot be interrupted. Authorised holiday work attracts exceptional-work remuneration and compensatory rest under Articles 98 and 105. Only a holiday falling on Sunday is deferred to Monday; the law creates no automatic substitute for Saturday.

How Family Day is observed

Mandatory national holiday on Friday, December 25, 2026; Christians may celebrate Christmas, while participation in worship is not required.

Traditions of Family Day

  • Community observance

Households may gather, visit relatives and share food, while Christians may also attend Christmas Eve or Christmas Day worship. Customs and participation differ across Mozambique’s provinces, faiths, languages and household circumstances.

  • Public programme

Churches arrange their own services and music, and national authorities may issue Family Day messages or announce carefully defined acts of clemency. The actual programme, venue and access arrangements are set by the responsible institution for that year.

  • Planning the day

Intercity travel and shopping can be busy, so residents should confirm transport, market, congregation and essential-service schedules in advance. Health, transport, utilities, hospitality and other uninterrupted services can remain operational under the Labour Law.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Mozambique official holiday calendar or legislation. Government, regional, school and employer schedules in Mozambique may differ; check the linked official source and current local notices before making time-sensitive plans.
