When is Martyrs’ Day?

In 2026, Martyrs’ Day falls on Sunday, July 19, 2026. It is classified here as a Myanmar public holiday.

History of Martyrs’ Day

Martyrs’ Day in Myanmar commemorates the assassination of General Aung San and eight other people on July 19, 1947, months before independence. Gunmen entered the Secretariat in Rangoon, now Yangon, during a meeting of the Executive Council. Those remembered are Aung San, Ba Cho, Ba Win, Mahn Ba Khaing, Abdul Razak, Sao San Tun, Thakin Mya, Ohn Maung and Ko Htwe. Naming the full group matters: the commemoration is not solely a personal anniversary for Aung San, although his role in the independence negotiations makes him its best-known figure.

The principal memorial space is the Martyrs’ Mausoleum in Yangon, and ceremonies have included wreath-laying, sirens or moments of silence at the time of the attack. The event’s public prominence has changed under successive governments. Aung San is also the father of Aung San Suu Kyi, which has added contemporary political sensitivity, but the holiday’s historical basis remains the 1947 killings rather than later party politics.

July 19 is listed as a public holiday in the 2026 authority-issued calendar. Official access to memorial sites, attendance rules and broadcast arrangements are announced separately and can change. Families may remember privately or use the day for historical learning. In areas outside the issuing administration’s effective control, ceremonies and closures may differ, while hospitals, transport and other essential services continue on holiday rosters.

How Martyrs’ Day is observed

A fixed July 19 public holiday of remembrance; mausoleum access, official ceremonies and operational closures depend on current national and local notices.

Traditions of Martyrs’ Day

  • Wreaths and official remembrance

Representatives may lay wreaths at the Martyrs’ Mausoleum or other memorials, subject to access rules and the announced ceremonial programme.

  • Silence and reflection

Some institutions and households pause near the time of the 1947 attack or reflect quietly on those killed before independence.

  • Learning the nine names

Schools, media and families may revisit the Secretariat assassination and remember the full group rather than reducing the day to one leader.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Myanmar official and legal guidance. Myanmar-calendar and annual government holiday notices should be confirmed for final dates and local-service schedules.
