When is Independence Day?
In 2026, Independence Day falls on Friday, July 3, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.
History of Independence Day
Independence Day commemorates the United States Declaration of Independence of July 4, 1776. It is federal and CNMI legal holiday, but it does not mean the Northern Mariana Islands became an independent country. The Commonwealth remains in political union with and under United States sovereignty under the Covenant.
July 4 also has a sensitive Saipan history. National Park Service research identifies July 4, 1946 as the release date for Indigenous Chamorro and Carolinian civilians still held after the war; it is remembered locally as Liberation Day. Commemoration should acknowledge civilian suffering, survival and rebuilding rather than describe the wartime transition solely as military triumph.
Parades, community programmes, family gatherings and fireworks may occur under current local arrangements. July 4 falls on Saturday in 2026, so the CNMI weekend rule moves the legal closure to Friday, July 3. A government closure does not give every resident the same leave. CNMI agencies follow Commonwealth law and personnel rules, federal offices follow the federal calendar, and private employers generally set paid-holiday terms through contracts or policy. Military missions, hospitals, utilities, transport, public safety and other essential services continue as operational needs require.
How Independence Day is observed
The date is July 4. Because it falls on Saturday in 2026, CNMI law moves the legal closure to Friday, July 3.
Traditions of Independence Day
Memorial ceremonies
Wreaths, flags, prayers and moments of silence may honour those remembered at American Memorial Park and other community sites.
