When is Heroes’ Day?
In 2026, Heroes’ Day falls on Sunday, March 1, 2026. Because the date falls on a weekend, many workplaces observe a substitute day on Monday, March 2, 2026; exact rules depend on the applicable jurisdiction and schedule.
History of Heroes’ Day
Heroes’ Day is anchored in March 1, 1870, when Marshal Francisco Solano López was killed at Cerro Corá and the Paraguayan War, also called the War of the Triple Alliance, reached its final battle. The conflict against Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay devastated Paraguay’s population, economy and territory. Official memory long made López the central heroic figure, although his leadership remains historically contested.
A responsible guide must look beyond one commander. Paraguayan commemoration includes soldiers, women, children and civilians who endured mobilisation, hunger, displacement and the work of rebuilding after 1870. The National Archive, cultural institutions and the Cerro Corá site use documents and interpretation to examine both sacrifice and catastrophe. Heroism can therefore be discussed critically rather than as uncomplicated military triumph.
Law No. 7544 designates March 1 a national holiday and one of four dates that the executive may move to a neighbouring Monday. In 2026, when March 1 fell on Sunday, Decree No. 5508 transferred the work-free day to Monday March 2. The historical anniversary remained March 1, while the observed closure changed for that year.
How Heroes’ Day is observed
Heroes’ Day is a movable national public holiday; ceremonies retain the March 1 anniversary even when the official day off is transferred.
Traditions of Heroes’ Day
Wreaths and memorials
Officials, veterans’ families and community groups place wreaths at Paraguayan monuments and remember military personnel and civilians affected by war.
Historical education
Archives, schools and museums examine documents, battlefield sites and testimony, giving the commemoration greater depth than a simple patriotic slogan.
The focus of Heroes’ Day
On Heroes’ Day, ceremonies and educational programmes in Paraguay focus on the event, institution or people named by this date. That historical focus distinguishes it from the country’s other civic holidays.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Paraguay national holiday law and official calendar. Paraguay’s Law No. 7544 allows the executive to transfer specified civic holidays and appoint limited special holidays. Check the annual official calendar for the practical day off.
